In thirty years of chiropractic practice, I have seen many patients respond well to chiropractic treatment.
The carpal tunnel is the area of the wrist. The long bones in the wrist and the long bones in the palm come together. There are eight small bones about the size of a rock called the carpal bones. These bones form the back. The lower back is considered a tunnel. A nerve that enters the hand, called the median nerve, passes through a tunnel.
It is called carpal tunnel syndrome when the small carpal bones are misaligned and affect the median nerve causing symptoms.
A variety of symptoms can occur with carpal tunnel syndrome. Wrist discomfort may occur. Numbness or swelling of the thumb, thumb and middle finger may also be felt. Some people experience grip weakness when holding objects with their hands.
There is often a connection between this condition and the neck. Nerves travel up the wrists and hands through the neck and out the spine. A pinched nerve in the neck can cause symptoms like carpal tunnel syndrome. A neck and wrist examination is performed when a patient complains of this condition and visits a chiropractor. If a chiropractor finds an abnormality, he or she can provide safe, drug-free, non-surgical treatment to the affected area.
A November 2018 study in the Journal of Joint Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy found that patients who received conservative treatment. Such chiropractic care or surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome had similar results one year later. But, the conservative treatment group needed less time off work and fewer treatment costs. We're about $3,000 less than those who underwent surgery. This suggests that people with carpal tunnel syndrome have exhausted conservative treatment before opting for surgery.
I recently finished working with a patient to help with carpal tunnel syndrome. The thumb, index finger, and middle finger where he slept at night were very swollen. He worked in the factory during the day. Between long working hours and too little sleep, he was exhausted. In the first examination, we found a pinched nerve in the neck, causing discomfort in the hand. After chiropractic treatment fixed the pinched nerve, he was pain-free and able to sleep well. After a few nights of sleep, he returned to his normal, energetic self.
For more than 25 years, practitioners have been helping patients. With carpal tunnel syndrome and many other musculoskeletal problems.
